This reminds me of a Halloween party I went to in a French neighborhood in Montreal a long time ago (before the World Wide Web was in the popular media). Being bilingual, I have a bit of both cultures, but most of the patrons at this party were francophone and not really exposed to the Star Trek culture. I met three girls dressed as members of ST-TNG crew, and I was the only one at that party who knew who they were dressed as. They were so relieved that SOMEONE knew what their costumes were (the girl who had done the sewing had spent two months working on the three costumes) that they latched onto me and kept me entertained with banter until my girlfriend showed up about two hours later. If nothing else, it drove home how one person's popular culture may be just an oddity to others.
